High dose radioactive iodine therapy and its short term adverse effects

The disorders of the thyroid gland are on rise. Radioactive iodine (RAI- I-131) is now used for treatment hyperthyroidism and carcinoma. This helps in destruction follicular cells radiation help annulling cancer cells. RAI has many adverse effects; short-term effects include – gastrointestinal, salivary dysfunction, thyroiditis, long-term - secondary carcinomas. facilities giving radioactive therapy (RAIT) less state Kerala; also RAIT studied our population. To evaluate pattern following high doses patients with carcinoma study was designed as a prospective observational conducted attending Department Nuclear Medicine high-dose radioiodine tertiary care center. Patients were followed up any occurrences six months. Data analyzed using SPSS software version 18 an independent t-test done to find association between dose drug reactions (ADR). comprised 75 participants, which, 59(79%) females. reported by 59 participants (79%). Loss taste smell 48 (64%), xerostomia 30 (40%) reported. After one month RAIT, these subsided. vs ADR found be significant (p=0.008). complete blood counts (CBC) pre-and post- showed statistically decrease all parameters (p=0.00 each). produces which self-limiting. However, there need identify manage it better patient compliance.
